About Wax Letter Seals

There is a direct line of descent from the seals used in the ancient world, to those used in medieval and post-medieval Europe, to those used in the Western world today. Seals were originally applied as a mark of the sender, and to secure private documents in such a way that the correspondence couldn’t be opened without the seal being broken. They came to be used on legal documents and top secret letters between governments and kingdoms. Traditionally seals bear the motif of the sender.
